People can fall into debt anytime of the year and for many reasons, but February is often the time when many people who have been struggling financially tip over into actual debt problems. The problems are not only caused by Christmas spending but other factors too, such as ill-health, heating bills and relationship breakdown.
Citizens Advice Sutton (CAS), is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority to provide debt advice services. The team of specialist debt advisers provide the full range of debt advice including Debt Relief Orders, income maximisation and challenging debts etc. The Citizens Advice Sutton service is free, confidential, independent and impartial and is provided face to face, by appointment at the CAS offices in underneath the Central Library or in Carshalton.
Steve Triner, the CAS CEO says that people needing debt advice should only access such advice from an organisation such as CAS that is regulated by the FCA. Steve warns that any person providing ‘unauthorised debt counselling’ may be committing a criminal offence with a maximum prison sentence of two years, a fine, or both.
The very experienced specialist debt advisers at Citizens Advice Sutton have, in recent years, experienced an increase in the complexity of clients’ debt advice needs. More people are struggling with priority debts such as Council Tax arears and utility bills. The team is supporting more clients than ever with Debt Relief Orders. A DRO is a low cost insolvency procedure available to some people with debts of no more than £20,000. A debtor can only obtain a Debt Relief Order through an Approved Intermediary such as a member of the Citizens Advice Sutton debt advice team.
