A new local company has been launched with the sole aim of making a significant difference to the lives of families raising children with additional needs and disability.

PlayWise Learning Community Interest Company (CIC) has been formed to ensure the continuation of the unique Portage service a home-visiting educational service for pre-school children with SEND and their families for many years to come.

The service is currently provided by the London Borough of Sutton and Sutton Council has guaranteed further funding for two years.

The company has been set up by the current manager of the service Pam Fry and with the full support of the amazing team of Portage workers.

She and all of her staff are moving to the new company as of 1st April 2019.

“For many years we have seen the benefits of Portage interventions and so PlayWise has been launched to continue to provide the Portage service but also expand using the Portage principles to deliver to a wider age range and provide a variety of new support services to children, families and professionals,” said Pam.

As funding is not guaranteed for more than two years Pam and her team are introducing new chargeable services such as:

PIP (Portage Intervention Plus) – expanding the Portage principles for youngsters aged from 0 – 8. These plans will widen the current offer and enable access for all families who have a child (ren) with additional needs.

Membership services to allow parents to enjoy the comfort of a brand new community hub, providing a range of information, advice, groups for parents & children & to give additional support

Subscriptions services to provide bespoke hands on practice & training for nurseries, pre-schools and schools (and businesses) who are looking to support their staff and setting to best meet the needs of disabled children in their care.

A discretionary fund to help support parents who may not be able to access the new services

“This launch has been planned for two years and so is the culmination of a huge amount of work and it is a great day,” said Pam.

“We are starting the company with a huge amount of enthusiasm and a fund raising target. These funds will enable us to develop the Community Hub and deliver new services that do not currently exist in the borough as well as offer a range of free training and wellbeing courses for parents that will have a positive impact on the lives of the children and families we support.”

The target for PlayWise is £100,000 and to ensure no momentum is lost a special GoFundMe campaign has been launched.
